Youth Week events set to inspire ‘change’ among young people in Shire of Denmark

The Shire of Denmark is set to celebrate Youth Week 2022 by hosting a range of recreational and creative workshops kicking off next week.

The theme of this year’s Youth Week is “courage to change” which aims to empower young people to form their own opinions, enhance decision-making and create change, according to the Department of Communities.

The Denmark Youth Week program kicks off with a skateboarding workshop held at the Denmark Skate Park on Brazier Street from 10am to 12 noon on April 11.

Giant water slides will take over Kwoorabup Community Park from 11am to 2pm on April 12.

Young creatives can try their hand at jewellery making through a polymer clay jewellery workshop at the Denmark Civic Centre from 10am to 1pm on April 13.

The week will come to an end with a mountain biking workshop where people can learn new bike skills on rollers, ramps and jumps at McLean Park from 9am to 12pm on April 14.

“Our Youth Week program will include a skateboarding workshop hosted by Rollin Youth, Giant waterslides by Monsterball, a polymer clay jewellery workshop by My Little Shop of Fun and a mountain bike workshop hosted by Monkey Rock Mountain Bike Co,” a Shire spokesperson said.

“The activities are free of charge but numbers are limited for some of the workshops and registration essential.”

This year’s Youth Week celebrations will look a little different to minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19 in the region.

“The rapid spread of COVID-19 in the Great Southern threatened to put a stop to our Youth Week 2022 celebrations,” a Shire spokesperson said.

“But in the spirit of the courage to change theme, the Shire looked at ways we can make changes to our usual program to enable our Youth Week celebrations to go ahead.

“Changes were made to our usual two-day Youth Fest event in favour of a series of small group activities, spread over four days to avoid large group gatherings.”
