Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins opens up about the agony of endometriosis

As a dancer, Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins knows how to “handle pain well”.

But nothing, she says, could have prepared her for the pain of endometriosis — an agonising condition suffered by one in 10 women.

Watkins told Who Magazine that she was on a national tour with The Wiggles last March when it hit.

“I started bleeding every single day,” she said. “I thought that was really bizarre.”

Surgery to remove five cysts left her in “so much agony” that she was forced to take six weeks off from the hectic tour.

Watkins said she was surprised about the surgery’s impact given her fitness, revealing she could not even lift a kettle to pour a cup of tea in the immediate aftermath.

“Apparently, I just woke up and I said, ‘Sore, sore. I’m sore’,” Watkins said.

“I remember waking up and you’re just in agony. You can’t even roll over on your side.

“Obviously women are having babies all the time and caesareans.

“It’s that kind of idea — in a different way. Even though you can’t see anything from the outside, the inside is so painful.”

Soon after the surgery, Watkins and husband, fellow Wiggle Lachlan Gillespie, announced their separation.

But the 29-year-old said she leant on her bandmates, including Gillespie, while recovering.

“It’s so great having them and having Lachy as my best friend,” Watkins said.

“I’m so lucky.”
