Manjimup’s Zack Johnston has achieved a rare milestone for a student of his age, having his application to be a registered owner/wool classer approved.
Zack is currently completing Year 12 at the WA College of Agriculture in Harvey.
As part of achieving this qualification Zack completed a Certificate III in Advanced Wool Handling, as well further training in Wool Clipping Preparation at Narrogin TAFE.
Zack said he had completed the qualification to help his family in managing the sheep they owned.
“We have a small mob at home of 275 ewes, it’s just convenient being able to class our own wool,” he said.
He said the course had been made easier thanks to his studies at school and he was considering undertaking a Certificate IV in wool clip preparation.
The wool classer registrations are issued by the Australian Wool Exchange.
WA College of Agriculture manager of farm training Paul Dyson praised Zack’s achievement.
“Zack has made the most of his educational opportunities at Harvey Agricultural College over the last three years and completed further training in his own time,” he said.
“Having his application approved by AWEX as a wool classer is an amazing achievement at his age.”
