Women’s taskforce meets to advise Federal Government on driving equality

The high-powered group of women advising the government on economic equality will feed ideas for change into next May’s Budget rather than Labor’s first economic statement in a month’s time.

The Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce, led by the head of Chief Executive Women Sam Mostyn, met for the first time on Wednesday as part of the government’s pledge to prioritise gender equality and get more women into well-paid jobs.

Shelley Cable, a proud Wilman-Nyoongar woman and the leader of Minderoo Foundation’s Generation One initiative, is the sole WA representative on the 13-person taskforce.

She said that brought a fair amount of responsibility, but also there was recognition around the table that no single solution would help women right around the country.

“What I’m really wanting to ensure is that regional and remote communities don’t get left behind in this conversation,” she said after the meeting.

Ms Cable described the first meeting as optimistic and energetic.

“It’s quite a formidable group of women, who know many of the solutions that need to be put in place to advance women’s economic equality in this country,” she said.

“The October budget is very, very close. We’ve definitely got an eye as well towards the next May budget.”
