What’s On: What you need to know about Geraldton’s mask-free Australia Day celebrations

Unlike in Perth, Peel and the South West, Geraldton’s Australia Day celebrations will be a mask-free occasion.

Despite expanded proof-of-vaccination requirements not coming into effect until January 31, anyone attending the City of Perth’s Australia Day Skyworks show will need to provide evidence they are fully vaccinated.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said this would not be the case at the local event, with punters only asked to check in using the SafeWA app or forms.

“Other than that we encourage everyone to have a good time and enjoy the freedoms that only people in the Mid West get to enjoy,” he said.

Those celebrating in Perth, Peel and the South West will have to mask up at all indoor and outdoor events.

Family-friendly activities are on offer at Stow Gardens from 8am, with the main stage lineup starting from 3pm with speeches, citizenship ceremony, welcome to country and Wilinyu Dancers.

Citizen of the year winners will be announced at 4.40pm, before musical acts, including Jilkamarta Keesha Forrest Pananka, Harvest Guide, Midnight Gypsies and Grace Barbe, take to the stage to entertain the crowd.

Food stalls will be up and running from 2pm to 9pm.

The explosive finale — the Europcar Fireworks — are due to start at 8.30pm. Due to the fireworks display, the Esplanade will be closed from 10am on Wednesday.
