West Coast coach Adam Simpson reveals injured star Elliot Yeo ‘touch and go’ for round one

West Coast star Elliot Yeo is still in doubt for round one, more than five months since his battle with ostetis pubis began.

Yeo hasn’t played AFL since Round 11, 2020 and missed the club’s failed finals campaign as the Eagles opted out of surgery for the midfield star.

But his return to the training track is still hampered by the ostetis pubis battle, with coach Adam Simpson today confirming his star was “touch and go”.

“He’s going ok,” Simpson told Sportsday Radio.

“He’s still going to be touch and go for round one.

“He’s going into change of direction mode now, so he hasn’t actually trained yet.”

Simpson lamented the AFL’s shorter pre-season heading into 2021 as another hurdle for Yeo to overcome.

“He’s taking small steps forward,” he revealed.

“He’s not training with the main group, but he’s advancing in his running.

“The problem we’ve got is the shorter pre-season.

“There’s no wiggle room for anyone who gets an injury, let alone Elliot who’s coming back from a long term.”

Simpson also confirmed the club was still waiting to hear what penalty provisionally suspended forward Willie Rioli will receive, more than a year after he was stood down for allegedly tampering with a urine sample.

But the West Coast mentor said there was good news for the club with recruits Alex Witherden and Zac Langdon impressing on the track.

“(Witherden’s) had four or five years in the system (so) he knows he’s got to work really hard to get a spot,” Simpson said.

“We’re gonna give him every chance. So far so good.

“(Zac), like Alex, is trying to prove himself to get himself in the best 22.”

The Eagles will play one practice match on the last weekend in February and one official pre-season match, likely against the Dockers, on the March 3-March 7 weekend, the AFL confirmed.

Round One kicks off with West Coast taking on Gold Coast at Optus Stadium on March 21.
