WA’s super storm: Geraldton home has roof torn off during wild weather

Security camera footage has emerged of the moment yesterday’s storm caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mangga ripped the roof off a second house in Geraldton.

The video shows a severe gust of wind damaging the house at 271 Fourth Street in Wonthella yesterday afternoon around 4pm.

Neighbour Bayley Olden, who supplied the footage, said there was a sudden violent gust of wind down the street which ripped the roof off.

“A big squall came through and it peeled the roof off like a can of sardines,” he said.

Earlier in the day around 11:30am another Geraldton home in Waggrakine suffered a similar fate.

Geraldton State Emergency Services manager Tom Wilson said the house was badly damaged by the storm with debris blocking the street.

“Thankfully we were able to clear the road but the home was badly damaged,” he said.

The owner of the home declined to comment, but said it was lucky the house was an unoccupied rental because the damage was quite extensive and someone may have been hurt.
