Wade ton hands Tasmania one-day win v Vic

Victoria’s all-star batting line-up proved no match for the big-hitting of Matthew Wade as Tasmania opened their one-day campaign with an impressive 65-run win in Townsville.

The Tigers reached an imposing 8-321 on the back of a record breaking six-laden century from Wade.

Victoria’s top-order all got starts but only Marcus Harris (69 from 73 balls) made a significant contribution.

Test discard Peter Handscomb was out for 22 after scoring a duck to open the season, while Glenn Maxwell made 21 after top-scoring with 80 in Victoria’s opening defeat on Sunday.

Victoria lost wickets at regular intervals after Harris departed with the score at 3-141, and Victoria were eventually bowled out for 256 off 47.2 overs.

Former Test wicketkeeper Wade opened his season with intent at Riverway Stadium in scoring 117 off just 74 balls, including six sixes.

It was the quickest century scored by a Tasmanian in the competition’s history, with Wade reaching three figures off just 65 deliveries.

“I feel opening the batting in one-day cricket is a nice spot to be,” said Wade, who hasn’t featured in the national team at Test or ODI level for almost a year.

“I’m just trying to score as many hundreds as I can.

“I hear talk about wicketkeepers and players making hundreds, and I don’t see that happening with a lot of keepers around the country at the moment, so all I can do is what I’m doing.

“I finished last year pretty well, so I feel pretty comfortable in my game.

“I’m batting as well as I have for a long time, so I’m just trying to give myself the best opportunity. I’m not too worried about what is going on elsewhere.”

Wade was ably backed by fellow opener Ben McDermott as the pair put on 170 off 22.5 overs.

Tasmania’s unheralded bowling attack enjoyed a good day out with quick Tom Rogers (4-53) and spinner Clive Rose (4-42) both shining.
