WA veterans flourish against Blues

Western Australia have built a strong platform in their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales at Bankstown Oval thanks to half centuries from Cameron Bancroft and Shaun Marsh.

After a grinding opening session, the visitors upped the scoring rate against a strong Blues attack to reach 1-158 at tea.

Bancroft found his scoring range during the middle session to go into the break unbeaten on 89, having hit eight boundaries and faced 198 deliveries.

Marsh, who scored at a similar rate, ended the session on 55 not out.

The pair have put on 130 for the second wicket after the early dismissal of Sam Whiteman.

Allrounder Jack Edwards (1-25) enticed the opener to edge a wide delivery to first slip where Trent Copeland took a sharp catch.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, WA saw off the new ball attack of Trent Copeland and Scott Tremain but could only manage 57 during the entire first session.

Both sides are chasing a win in the penultimate round fixture as two of the five states still in the hunt for a spot in the Shield final at the end of the month.
