Police are desperately searching for an elderly man who went missing in the State’s north and hasn’t been seen since Friday, with air search and rescue called in to help.

Michael Gill was believed to be travelling from South Hedland to Perth last Tuesday in his grey 2010 Toyota Kluger, registration 1GCY949.

Police said at some point during his travels — believed to be Friday — the 70-year-old left his car and started walking along the Great Northern Highway, approximately 30kms north of the Kumarina Roadhouse.

An alert notifying the public of Mr Hill’s disappearance was sent out by police on Monday, however, officers located his vehicle abandoned in bush land Tuesday afternoon, prompting urgent concerns for his welfare.

SES crews and Australian Maritime Safety Authority jets are assisting with the search.

The car was found by officers 110kms south of the Newman townsite.

Police urge anyone who sights Mr Gill, or has information relating to his whereabouts, to contact police immediately on 131 444.
