A Goldfields gold hunter has achieved every prospector’s dream — uncovering a 1.4kg nugget worth almost $100,000.

The prospector, who wants to remain anonymous, brought the nugget into Finders Keepers Gold Prospecting and owner Matt Cook said it was exciting to see such a big find.

“It’s good to see people out there and finding nuggets like this,” he said. “They’re harder to find but they’re still out there.”

Mr Cook said the prospector was walking around salt bush flats in the Kalgoorlie region when the detector began sounding and, after some digging, the hefty piece of precious metal was uncovered.

At the current price of gold, Mr Cook said the nugget was worth almost $100,000.

He said nuggets of its size were found only a few times a year and were usually upturned by prospectors using heavy machinery, not metal detectors.

Mr Cook said many prospectors were out and about in the Goldfields trying their luck.

“It’s so busy — I can’t remember a year like it,” he said.

“And gold prices are high at the moment — it’s like a gold rush.”
