WA border finally open for NSW residents

NSW residents finally have the chance to holiday or visit loved ones in Western Australia after the state brought down its border restrictions.

Residents of NSW and Victoria can from Tuesday enter WA for the first time in almost nine months without spending 14 days in quarantine.

It comes after NSW on Monday reported its third consecutive day of no local COVID-19 transmission, having last week uncovered a COVID-19 case in a Sydney hotel quarantine cleaner.

Four cases were uncovered in returned travellers in NSW hotel quarantine.

“It is very pleasing to know that no further cases have been identified over the past five days,” WA Premier Mark McGowan told reporters on Monday.

But Mr McGowan warned WA’s hard border would be quickly reinstated if COVID-19 transmission resumed in Australia’s east.

NSW Health on Monday said investigations were continuing into the source of the hotel quarantine cleaner’s infection, but the strain of the virus appeared to be of US origin and possibly linked to international aircrew.

Testing of the cleaner’s close contacts was continuing and no further positive virus results had been identified, NSW Health said.

Meanwhile, NSW police have accepted responsibility for a bungle that allowed a German mother and son who recently arrived in Australia to board a flight from Sydney to Melbourne without quarantining.

NSW Deputy Commissioner Jeff Loy said the officer involved in the oversight was on his second shift and was “obviously remorseful”.

The pair, who were dual nationals, did not try to mislead authorities.
