Scotland stunning England, England beating India, legends retiring and new names coming to the fore – it has been a spell-binding summer of cricket!

On the last day of the international summer, as England faced India at The Oval, the Sky Sports Cricket pundits picked their favourite moments from the past few months…

Read below to see their selections and let us know yours on Twitter @SkyCricket.

NASSER HUSSAIN – Cook’s farewell runs

Alastair Cook bowed out as an international batsman with 71 in his first innings and a 33rd Test century in his second as all inside The Oval stood to salute England’s leading run scorer…

NASSER SAYS: “As a viewer I think it has been a brilliant summer. There has hardly been a dull session, a dull Test and there has been some cracking white-ball stuff, too. Test-wise, it has been what we expect from England at home. They are very good when the ball is moving around and have some fine cricketers, plus to bounce back from losing the first Test to Pakistan to then go on and beat India, the No 1 side in the world, has shown their quality.

“However, my moment is last week, for one of England’s greatest-ever cricketers. It would have been depressing for his team-mates for him to go out with two low scores but, boy, did he put on a show.”

MIKEY HOLDING – Stokes dismissing Kohli at Edgbaston

India began the fourth morning of the first Test needing 84 runs to beat England with five wickets in hand. Favourites? Maybe, but not once Ben Stokes pinned Virat Kohli lbw. England going on to win by 31 runs…

MIKEY SAYS: “I’m going back to the start of the England v India series. This was a magic moment for England. It, in my opinion, changed the outcome of the first Test and had a huge effect in this series.

“When Kohli went in that game, most people said England will win it. They did win and India were fighting back each time. I think India would also have lost at Lord’s with the conditions but it would have been 1-1- heading into the third Test.”

ROB KEY – Jos Buttler’s ODI century at Old Trafford

England looked poised for a routine victory over Australia in the fifth ODI in Manchester when they bowled Tim Paine’s men out for 205 – but after slipping to 27-4 and 114-8 it was left to Jos Buttler to complete a superb unbeaten ton to win the game and seal a 5-0 whitewash…

ROB SAYS: “Buttler has been the player of the summer for me. I bet even he can’t believe how much his stock has increased. At Old Trafford, England had the chance to beat Australia 5-0 in the ODI series. It wasn’t straightforward, Australia got 205 and England were struggling – but Buttler played a gem of an innings.

“He had to weather a storm from Billy Stanlake and face different types of bowlers while he was running out of partners. He also has the power to clear the ropes and take the pressure off. He is an ice-cold cricketer.”

DAVID GOWER – The Kohli-Anderson duel

Jimmy Anderson did not manage to dismiss Virat Kohli in the Test series this summer – but goodness knows how as two of Test cricket’s finest went head to head…

DAVID SAYS: “It was touted as a match-up to watch and it has been brilliant throughout. The one mystery to me is why Anderson hasn’t got him out at any stage. Anderson has bowled beautifully at him but Kohli has played brilliantly, laying to rest those doubts of the previous tour. He has shown himself to be a cut above.”

MIKE ATHERTON – Scotland beating England

There were absolute scenes in Edinburgh as Scotland beat England in the one-off ODI, seamer Safyaan Sharif pinning last man Mark Wood lbw to spark wild home celebrations…

ATHERS SAYS: “I’ve gone for England losing to Scotland at The Grange. Not just because it was the greatest day in Scottish cricketing history but also for the day itself. Scottish cricket put on a fantastic day. It was a packed house in a small, cosy ground with lots of kids in and a wonderful atmosphere. And little old Scotland turned England over in the end.

“Our producer is a Scotsman so that is going to keep me in a job! Seriously, it showed Associate cricket is improving. The gulf between the Associates and the Test-playing nations was immense but it is smaller now.”

DAVID LLOYD – Marriage proposal at Lord’s

With the cricket in full swing in the ODI between England and India at Lord’s, Charan Gill proposed to Pavan Baines in the crowd, with Bumble playing matchmaker…

BUMBLE SAYS: “We’ve had some great cricket and some wonderful fun – I have been trainspotting, been on the Solent but what about the marriage proposal at Lord’s?! I thought this could go either way – it could be awful – but the young lady was delighted. They came up into the commentary box and had a wonderful time. And they are still together!”
