USA bids to host Rugby World Cups

USA Rugby wants to become the first country in North or South America to host the Rugby World Cup, and has launched a bid to stage the tournament, in either 2027 or 2031.

Australia, which last hosted in 2003, and Russia, which has never hosted, have already announced they are bidding to stage the 2027 tournament while Argentina have withdrawn having previously expressed an interest. The 2023 men’s tournament will be held in France.

World Rugby is aiming to decide the hosts for both tournaments in May 2022.

Cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago and New York have expressed an interested in holding games, some of which would be played in NFL stadiums.

USA Rugby is also bidding for the 2029 Women’s World Cup, with January the deadline for submissions for the events. The 2021 event, now delayed to late 2022, is in New Zealand with the 2025 hosts also to be determined.

USA Rugby World Cup bid chairman Jim Brown said: “This is a proud moment as we introduce our vision for a World Cup on American soil.

“We are confident in the strength of this bid, the support around us, the cities and stadiums interested in hosting, our country’s top-level infrastructure for large-scale sports events and the opportunity the US population of sports fans presents for rugby’s growth, both domestically and globally.”
