US presidential candidate calls for social media sites to pay users

Users could soon get paid to use social media platforms if a United States Democratic presidential candidate has his way.

Andrew Yang, who is in the running to take over for US President Donald Trump, said “right now companies are profiting from our data to the tune of billions of dollars and we don’t get any of it, we don’t know what it is”.

“We need to establish that our data is our own and if a company is using and selling that data then we need to get a cut.”

Nine in 10 Australians have a social media account and 60 per cent browse Facebook daily.
