Australian country music star Keith Urban, former Gold Coast pro-surfer turned DJ Paul “Fish” Fisher and Christian band For King & Country have been nominated for Grammy Awards, but pop star Troye Sivan was a surprise snub.
Rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake dominated Friday’s nomination ceremony with the most nods.
Lamar, Drake, Cardi B, Post Malone and Brandi Carlile filled the Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year categories.
There were plenty of surprise snubs in the unveiling of nominees for the 61st Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 10, including Sivan.
He had been considered a strong chance in the Best New Artist and Pop categories after the success of Revelation, his song from the Joel Edgerton-directed film Boy Erased.
Sivan still had a big week however, scoring a shock Golden Globe nomination on Thursday for Revelation.
Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Jay-Z also received cold shoulders from Grammy voters in the major categories.
Grammy voters were criticised last year when just one female artist won a major award, Alessia Cara, who took out Best New Artist.
This year, six of the eight Best New Artist nominees are women – H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Dua Lipa, Margo Price, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith.
Five of the eight Album of the Year nominees are from women.
“Being a young, black, queer woman in America, there was something I had to say and there was a group of people I wanted to celebrate and I’m happy to be representing them,” an emotional Janelle Monae told CBS after hearing she was nominated for Album of the Year for Dirty Computer.
Urban and his movie star wife Nicole Kidman will have a busy awards season.
Urban, a past winner of four Grammys, is nominated for Best Solo Country Performance for Parallel Line.
It came a day after Kidman kicked off her Hollywood awards season campaign with a Golden Globe nomination for Destroyer.
Fisher confirmed his rise as one of the world’s top house and techno producers with his hit Losing It nominated for best dance recording.
He is competing against some of the titans of the genre including super Silk City duo Mark Ronson and Diplo for Electricity, featuring Diplo.
For King & Country, led by Australian brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone – also no strangers to the Grammys with two wins in 2015 – were nominated for best Contemporary Christian Performance/Song for their hit Joy.
Lamar topped the nominations with eight, including seven for his music for the Marvel Studios blockbuster film Black Panther.
Black Panther: The Album is nominated for Album of the Year.
The other contenders for Album of the Year alongside Lamar and Monae are Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, H.E.R., Brandi Carlile, Drake and Post Malone.
Drake earned seven nominations overall.
Lady Gaga and Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper were surprise multiple nominees for music from their Oscar best picture contender, A Star Is Born, putting them both in the position to win Grammys and Oscars within weeks of each ceremony.
They are nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Swift usually dominates award ceremonies but her huge hit Reputation missed out on an Album of the Year nod. Swift only received one Grammy nomination – Best Pop Vocal Album.
Beyonce, Jay-Z and Grande were shut out of the Record, Album and Song of the Year categories.
