UPDATE: Richmond Tigers clarify Nick Vlastuin’s bizarre post-match gesture following scrutiny

Richmond has responded to questions over Nick Vlastuin portraying bizarre and seemingly inappropriate gestures following last night’s 27-point win over West Coast.

The defender was captured on camera gesturing towards his forearm, with the movement appearing to resemble something being injected into his skin.

But according to the club, the action wasn’t what it seemed.

“Thanks to @Richmond_FC who have got back to me with an answer,” veteran broadcaster Clint Wheeldon tweeted.

“The Tigers say Nick was imitating opening a bottle of wine as a celebration.”

The footage was brought to light by Wheeldon, who tagged Richmond CEO Brendon Gale in the post to ask his thoughts on it.

“I’m curious as to what this action during the club song from @Richmond_FC Nick Vlaustin last night is meant to symbolise? What’s he up to @brendongale25 ?” he wrote.

Veteran forward Jack Riewoldt can be seen standing next to Vlastuin at the time, with many social media users stating how drastically his body language changed after seeing the inappropriate action.

“Look how Jack Riewoldt’s face changes to serious mode when he sees it!” one user wrote.

“The look on Riewoldt’s face..” another added.

Social media users weren’t entirely convinced by the explanation from the reigning premiers.

The bizarre action comes after he and teammate Jayden Short were forced to apologise to youngster Maboir Chol earlier this month for repeated inappropriate touching.

“It was a stupid action and I am deeply embarrassed. I’ve apologised to Mabior,” Vlastuin said at the time.

Short added: “It was unacceptable behaviour and a poor example.”

Richmond admitted the groping is “not in line with the club or community expectations”, casting doubt over Vlastuin’s post-match behaviour last night.

Vlastuin was also in hot water at the tribunal this week for staging, adding further to his 2020 controversy.
