Two in custody after 16-hour stand-off with gunman in Tasmania

A 24-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman are in custody after a 16-hour siege ended in northern Tasmania.

The pair, who barricaded themselves inside a Launceston home, were apprehended on Saturday morning “after a tactical resolution” at the property on New World Avenue in Trevallyn, police have confirmed.

“No one has been injured,” Tasmania Police said in a statement, issued just after the resolution.

“Police would like to thank the Trevallyn community for their patience and understanding over the course of the incident.”

Commander Brett Smith earlier told the ABC about 34 police officers had been deployed to deal with the situation at any one time.

He said 33 shots were fired overnight and 14 nearby residents had been evacuated.

Officers had been negotiating with the pair in the hope of a peaceful outcome.

A range of specialty units were deployed to provide front-line support, including members of the Special Operations Group and the bomb response group.

The stand-off began on Friday afternoon when police went to the home as part of an ongoing investigation.

Cmdr Smith confirmed a woman — not the one taken into custody — was shot in the leg at the home last week.
