The Turkish Football Federation has sacked national team head coach Mircea Lucescu with immediate effect.
The Turkish federation released a statement saying it had reached an agreement with 73-year-old Lucescu to mutually terminate his contract.
Turkey have struggled under the Romanian coach, and were relegated to League C in the UEFA Nations League after finishing bottom of their group – they also failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Reports in Turkey claim Senol Gunes will replace Lucescu and return as coach 15 years after his last spell in charge of the Turkish side.
Gunes, who was Turkey coach between 2002 and 2004 when the team finished third at the 2002 World Cup, will stay on as Besiktas coach until at least the end of the season.
The 66-year-old, who has won the Turkish league twice with Besiktas and also coached Trabzonspor and Bursaspor, is expected to work with the Turkey squad for matches against Albania and Moldova in late March.
