Trap For Fools earns dramatic Mackinnon Stakes victory

WA-owned stayer Trap For Fools upstaged his rivals to win today’s $2 million Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

Starting a $26 chance, Trap For Fools was sent to the front by in-form jockey John Allen and held off Irish Derby winner Latrobe late in a tight finish.

Trap For Fools, raced by WA’s Geoff Evans, delivered Victorian trainer Jarrod McLean his first Group 1 triumph.

McLean thanked WA trainer Lindsey Smith, who prepared Trap For Fools to 10 victories before sending him to Victoria.

“In my thank yous I just forgot the main man, Lindsey Smith,” McLean said post-race.

“He’s just been terrific to me. Cougar Express winning the Grand National Hurdle was a big thrill and now this bloke.

“Obviously it was disappointing, the Cox Plate, but on that occasion I said that things happen for a reason. Maybe this was meant to happen.”

Trap For Fools was omitted from the Cox Plate field last month when the Moonee Valley Racing Club committee deemed his form wasn’t good enough.

The five-year-old has now won 14 of 32 starts.

Earlier, Mark Zahra made the most of suspended Ben Melham’s misfortune, guiding Santa Ana Lane to VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) glory.

Zahra picked up the ride on the Goodwood Handicap and Stradbroke Handicap winner after Melham was outed on Derby Day.
