Former Perth Wildcat Nic Kay has helped the Boomers prevail in what proved to be a dogfight against Italy.
The Aussies were pushed until the final whistle, finally prevailing 86-83.
Patty Mills scored a vital basket with less than 30 seconds remaining before Matisse Thybulle added a free throw to make the lead five points.
Italy hit back with two points before fouling to send the Boomers to the basket with 8.8 seconds on the clock.
Mills sunk his two shots, restoring Australia’s buffer, before Italy again scored – this time with only 4.3 seconds remaining.
But the Boomers controlled the ball to safely see the game out.
An impressive Kay finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds, shooting at 86 per cent, while Jock Landale was also big with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Thybulle, in his first tournament with the Boomers, was massive in the first half and helped Australia trail Italy by just the one point at half time, 44-45.
He had five points, four assists and a steal to to that point.
The Boomers next play Germany in their final group match on Saturday.
