Two Joels sit atop the Albany Advertiser footballer of the year award ladder after superb starts to the new Great Southern Football League season from Mt Barker youngster Joel Gray and Railways tough nut Joel Want.
The pair have each polled 11 votes in the first seven rounds of the season to share the top of the leaderboard, two votes clear of last year’s winner and Tigers gun Zane Marwick and North Albany star Matt Orzel.
Midfield trio Nic Chidgzey, Ryan Gaerth and Jack McPhee are next with six votes each, while Denmark-Walpole duo Jaden Guidi and Tyler Stone have also polled well with five apiece.
Want has best on ground performances against the Bulls in round 2, Royals in round 3 and Albany in round 5 to his name and his two- vote effort against the Kangas in round 6 has propelled the inside midfielder to 11 votes.
Gray picked up two votes against the Tigers at the weekend and has polled in five of the seven games thus far, including best-afield efforts against the Lions in round 6 and the Sharks in round 4.
Gray and Want will figure prominently in the early Kleemann Medal voting, while dual winner Marwick has again caught the eye in the first eight rounds.
The footballer of the year award is voted on by Albany Advertiser reporters covering each league game and does not include finals.
