The West Australian’s Annabel Hennessy and Anthony De Ceglie receive Walkley award nominations

The West Australian journalists have received two Walkley award nominations.

Federal political reporter Annabel Hennessy is nominated for best coverage of Indigenous affairs for her exclusive investigation into the incarceration of Aboriginal woman Jody Gore, who was convicted of killing her abusive ex-partner Damian Jones. Hennessy exposed how Ms Gore had acted in self-defence and after years of abuse.

The reporting compelled WA Attorney-General John Quigley to invoke rarely used mercy laws to free Ms Gore from prison.

The investigation sparked changes to WA criminal law to allow for courts to better take into account evidence of historical domestic violence suffered by perpetrators.

In June, Hennessy was named Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year for her Gore investigation.

Editor-in-chief Anthony De Ceglie is nominated for best headline, caption or hook for headlines ‘The Royal formerly known as Prince’, ‘Bridget over troubled rorters’ and ‘You had one Jobkeeper’.

De Ceglie is a previous joint winner of the category. In 2018, while deputy editor of Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph, he and colleague Brad Clifton won with headlines including “Bundle of Joyce” on the front page exclusive revealing Barnaby Joyce’s staffer Vikki Campion was pregnant with the then-deputy prime minister’s child.

The Walkleys are Australia’s most prestigious journalism prize.

Finalists were chosen from a field of 1408 nominations. Winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony November 20.
