VideoWATCH: Cross Counter has won the 3200m Lexus Melbourne Cup for trainer Charlie Appleby.

THE Melbourne Cup has been marred by an apparent serious injury to star UK galloper The CliffsofMoher.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained runner broke down just after crossing the post the first time – just 1000m after the start.

The condition of The CliffsofMoher, which was being ridden by star English jockey Ryan Moore, is not yet known.

Cross Counter won the Cup, the Charlie Appleby-trained stayer handing Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy his third Cup triumph.

More to come.
