Usman Khawaja says he doesn’t even bother thinking about his chances of reviving his Test career.
But, when pressed, Khawaja says he’d happily open the batting again for Australia.
Khawaja averages 96 as a Test opener, a role he’s performed in seven Test innings.
“If I ever get selected for Test cricket again, I would love to bat anywhere – it doesn’t really bother me, but I think the selectors know that,” Khawaja said on Monday.
The Queensland captain rated his 174 against South Australia as his best Sheffield Shield century.
Batting at No.4 for the Bulls in match which ended in a draw on Monday, Khawaja produced an epic 294-ball knock on a juicy Adelaide Oval pitch which favoured the fast bowlers.
The 34-year-old realised that feat would prompt debate about his chances of a recall for the looming Ashes series, particularly given the concussion scare to probable Test opener Will Pucovski.
“I don’t even worry about Test selection or Test cricket any more,” he said.
“I just play the game for Queensland and do what I need to.
“I could have easily gone out there and got myself a nice little red ink today but didn’t because it’s not what the team needed.
“It (Test cricket) is not even in the forefront, I am just trying to win games for Queensland.
“If I am doing that well enough and scoring runs, the stuff that is out of my control, will be out of my control.
“I have learnt from my past. I don’t even bother about it any more.
“People are always going to ask me about Test cricket – that’s fair enough, there is an Ashes coming up.”
Khawaja played the last of his 44 Tests in August 2019 – he averages 40.66 with eight centuries batting as an opener and at No.3, 4 and 6.
Khawaja pointed out he had made first-class centuries in every batting slot from “one to six”.
Asked if he still had a burning desire to play Test cricket again. Khawaja said: “You don’t score first-class hundreds if you don’t have competitiveness in you, they don’t fall off trees.
“I am always very competitive,” he said.
“Every guy will tell you, every game we play, I am extremely competitive.
“And I haven’t lost that competitive spirit in anything I do so there is always desire.”
