Teenage tennis star Talia Gibson shoots up rankings with three tournament wins

WA teenage tennis star Talia Gibson is pushing her way up the world rankings after winning three consecutive singles titles.

The 18-year-old won back-to-back tournaments in Caloundra after winning her maiden professional singles title at the ITF 15K event in Santa Fe, California earlier this year.

She came back from from a foot injury suffered in the semi-final in Santa Fe and after a short break from the tour, extended her winning streak to 15 matches with the Caloundra wins.

The Peppermint Grove product defeated Destanee Aiava in both finals after the win over Maria Kozyreva in Santa Fe.

Gibson, who started playing as a five-year-old and turned professional at the start of the year, faces a busy few months with tournaments in Korea, Darwin, Cairns, Adelaide, Sydney and Victoria.

She was ranked 1206 at the start of the year but the wins have seen her shoot up to 555 and more is expected.

She was unable to play tournament tennis for two years during COVID lockdown and lost her junior rankings when she was tipped to play in all junior grand slams.

Tennis West chief executive Brett Patten described Gibson, a member of Tennis Australia’s national development academy in Queensland, as “an incredible athlete.”

“She been one of the best nationally for her age group all the way through her career so far,” Patten said.

“We are expecting her to go onto bigger and better things on the back of these performances.”
