Key pair Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott have helped Tasmania overcome the loss of early wickets to be well placed at tea on day one of their Sheffield Shield match against Victoria in Melbourne.
After losing both openers within the space of five runs, Tasmania batted throughout the middle session without loss to be 2-155 at the break.
Wade and McDermott both looked comfortable, each striking several boundaries and a six apiece.
Former Test star Wade is unbeaten on 51 and McDermott is 42 not out.
Earlier, Todd Murphy was the unlikely figure to make a double breakthrough with the spinner returning successive wicket-maidens in just his second first-class outing.
Caleb Jewell was stumped by Sam Harper for 27 following a 53-run opening stand, with Tim Ward following a few minutes later bowled by Murphy’s arm-ball for 29.
A win for either side will put them within touching distance of a spot in this month’s Shield decider.
