Tajikistan debut as Asian Cup line-up set

Tajikistan have booked a slot at the Asian Cup for the first time and complete the 24-nation line-up for next year’s tournament.

The former Soviet republic became one of eleven teams to qualify on Tuesday, with the 0-0 draw in Kyrgyzstan enough to secure both Group F teams a place in the finals.

Bahrain sealed top spot in Group E with a 1-0 win over Turkmenistan, while Malaysia claimed one of the five berths available to the best runners-up beating Bangladesh 4-1 in Kuala Lumpur.

Palestine secured first place in Group B with a 4-0 thumping of the Philippines, who became the only second-placed team to miss out.

Uzbekistan ensured they finished top of Group C with a 2-0 win over second-placed Thailand, who still progressed.

India took top spot in Group D with a 4-0 win over Hong Kong, who also advanced as second-place finishers.

In Group A, Jordan defeated Kuwait 3-0 to top the section with Indonesia second after thrashing Nepal 7-0.

Australia, defending champions Qatar, four-time winners Japan plus Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Syria, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, China, Oman, Vietnam and Lebanon booked their spots last June.

Now the teams are known, the hunt is on for a venue. China withdrew from hosting due to the country’s attempts to impose a zero-COVID strategy and a new host is yet to be determined.
