The Busselton Magpies have edged out Donnybrook by less than a goal to remain in the hunt for the top spot on the South West Football League women’s ladder.
The Magpies and Dons were neck-and-neck for the entire match but the visitors held on to prevail 3.8 (26) to 3.3 (21).
It was a battle of several of the competition’s guns, with Donnybrook’s Charli Wicksteed, Chelsea Hutchinson and Lauren Vecchio playing starring roles, while Che’ Harcombe, Jessica Verbrugge and Grace Henderson-Mott all contributed solidly.
Meanwhile, Ellie Drown, Gemma Wharton and Katie-Jayne Grieve had an enormous impact on the game for Busselton. Emma Borinelli, Maddy Obal and Beth Beckett did their bit to get their side across the line.
Neither team were able to boot a major in tense first term, with the visitors taking a narrow 0.4 (4) to 0.1 (1) lead into the first break.
It was again Busselton who had their noses in front at the main break, leading 1.6 (12) to 1.2 (8) after the first two quarters.
In the third term, Donnybrook were able to work their way back into the match with two goals and headed into the final quarter with a two-point lead.
However, the experienced heads of Busselton were able to hand tough in the final quarter and the Dons couldn’t find the middle of the goals, going down narrowly by five points.
