Swans’ Warner stars in grand final defeat

Chad Warner does not intend ever to watch the AFL grand final where he delivered a star turn in a humiliated losing team.

The brilliant Warner had 29 disposals, 18 contested possessions, 10 clearances and 587 metres gained to go with two goals and was clearly Sydney’s best in Saturday’s 81-point loss to Geelong at the MCG.

“I was just absolutely cooked,” Warner said after the game.

“I just felt like I tried as hard as I could, which I guess is annoying in itself as well – knowing that you’ve done everything and they still pump you by 80 points.

“I take a little bit of confidence out of it but I still can’t explain how you feel after that loss.”

The Swans kept themselves in the game up until halftime, but Geelong’s unanswered six-goal third quarter “overwhelmed” their younger opponents.

“We probably could have done a lot more, that’s the annoying part,” Warner said.

“But we’ve got to wait a whole nother year and have another crack.”

Warner, like most of his teammates, exited stage left as soon as Geelong received the premiership cup.

“I just wanted to get out of there as quick as I could, really … it was devastating, absolutely devastating,” he said.

“We just walked off, just looking at the ground most of the time. That was about it.”

Asked if he would watch a replay of his performance, Warner said, “Definitely not. I’ll try and forget about it as quick as I can, I reckon”.

The 21-year-old’s excellent grand final underlined a brilliant breakout season where he has averaged 22.8 disposals and established himself as an explosive, goalkicking midfielder.

While admitting he was “done with footy for a bit” and ready to rest up, Warner remained confident the Swans could kick on again next year.

“Obviously I’m happy with my year. Today put a bit of a dampener on it, as it would,” he said.

“Hopefully we can do the same next year and maybe even be a bit better and get the win.

“That’s all that matters to me at the moment.

“Today was most of the boys’ first crack at it, mine as well

“I’d like to say all we can do is take experience out of it and so make this not happen again.”
