The CinefestOz Film Festival flew the flag for Bunbury at the recent Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards amidst a South West domination of the annual awards.
Australia’s South West operators won almost half of the gold medals on offer and more than a third of the silvers, including CinefestOZ’s gold inthe festivals and events category.
This was the second year in a row the film festival has won the gold medal, something chief executive Malinda Nixon could not have been happier about.
“It’s lovely to have this recognition for the festival because it is very much made up of all the contributions of all the different people across the region who help,” she said.
“We went on to get silver at the national awards last year so now getting gold places us back in that competition nationally.”
Busselton Jetty was the big winner from the event, winning two gold medals (major tourist attractions and ecotourism categories) as well as the Sir David Brand award for tourism.
According to Australia’s South West chief executive Catrin Alsop, the medal-winning businesses and attractions would “reap the benefits of the recognition not only within the industry, but also consumers as well.”
“It was a fantastic night,” she said.
“Everybody in the South West part of the room was just ecstatic and we got up time and time again to applaud people heading to the stage.”
