Super Bowl to have more cutouts than fans

This year’s NFL Super Bowl will have an audience of 25,000 fans, the smallest in the event’s history.

The NFL made the announcement on Tuesday, saying there would also be 30,000 cardboard cutouts of virtual fans in the stands to add to the atmosphere.

The attendance is still greater than the 22,500 the league had previous said would attend the showdown between the Tampa Bay Bucaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Also among the crowd at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium will be 7500 health workers who have received the vaccine for COVID-19.

Fans will be given masks and hand sanitiser prior to entering, an NFL spokesperson said. They must wear the masks throughout the game.

Those who can’t make it can pay $US100 to have themeselves made into cardboard cutout by uploading a photo to the NFL’s website. A portion of the money goes to charity.

Florida does not have an attendance limit for sporting events during the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision to allow fans was made in consultation with public health officials, the Florida Department of Health, and area hospitals and health officials.
