‘Stick at it’: West Coast Eagles star Tim Kelly’s advice for overlooked draftees

More than most AFL players, Tim Kelly knows about being overlooked on draft day.

So WA hopefuls who miss out this year due to shortened list sizes would be wise to listen when the West Coast star urges them to “stick at it”.

Kelly was taken with Pick 24 in the 2017 national draft by Geelong as a 23-year-old, earning a belated call-up on the back of five strong campaigns at WAFL level with South Fremantle.

Having quickly blossomed into an AFL star at the Cats and now the Eagles, the midfielder has warned AFL lists shrinking from a maximum of 47 to top of 44 could see similar local players with promise get overlooked next month.

“I think there’s definitely going to be some impact from shortening the list sizes,” Kelly told 7NEWS.

“There could be some decent players who miss out.”

Kelly said persistence would be the key for WA hopefuls who failed to earn a call-up.

“Try not to dwell on it too much,” he said.

“Just do everything you can to get better, and have another crack next year.

“It took me five or six years. Stick at it.”
