Spikers pleased with solid showing

Karratha’s North West Volleyball Association has returned victorious from the Country State Volleyball Championships, bringing back silver and gold across two divisions.

The two-day knockout competition was held in Perth on September 22 and 23, with teams from Albany, Busselton, Broome, Esperance, Karratha, Lakelands and Mandurah battling it out.

Karratha’s two men’s teams put on a good solid effort resulting in the B team taking second place in the B-grade competition.

The girls however took it all the way to the A-grade grand final in a thriller against Esperance and won the overall competition three sets to nil.

Team captain Chatthip Buenaflor said she was extremely proud of her players.

“We deserved to win because we’d been training hard every week for three months,” she said.

“We’ll start training for the next competition and fundraising early next year. We’re hoping to get some more sponsors to help us out as well.”

The team’s only junior player, Alycia Buenaflor, took out the most valuable player award in the A-grade series.

The weekend was filled with fun for the Karratha players and supporters alike with the great sportsmanship and camaraderie culminating in an evening out in Leederville sponsored by WA Volleyball.

The whole event was made possible through lots of hard work by all participants and association members pitching in to fundraise with car washes and sausage sizzles.
