Spencer Park 1 have claimed their fifth win in the annual Kellie York Memorial Game, after two early goals put them on top of Spencer Park 2 in the LGSHA women’s B-grade game on Saturday afternoon.
Played as part of Cancer Awareness Round, the match honours former Spencer Park player Kellie York, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2008.
Renee Greay opened the scoring for Spencer Park 1 and their lead was doubled when Mel McRae also found the back of the net.
Spencer Park 2 hit back through Emily Drew but her side trailed 2-1 at half-time.
Despite both sides having their chances on goal in the second half, neither could add to their early scoring.
Spencer Park 1 prevailed 2-1 at the final whistle, to win the memorial for the fifth time and for the second straight year.
Jodie Lloyd, McRae and Tahlia Scott all played key parts in their side winning while for Spencer Park 2 their best contributors were Hayley Manson, Jemma Wych and Drew.
The win boosts the finals chances of Spencer Park 1, who are third on the ladder with two rounds of the normal season remaining.
