Speechley defeats Winter Olympian Reddingius in Leonora Golden Gift 120m sprint

Kiara Reddingius started well in the women’s 120m open sprint final, but Kiara Speechley was able to overtake her and beat the Leonora-raised Winter Olympian at the Leonora Golden Gift on Sunday.

Speechley won in 14.33sec, with Reddingius second in 14.67sec.

Former Australian representative pole vaulter and top emerging 800m runner Emma Philippe was third in 15.23sec.

Philippe showed plenty of speed and was a fierce contestant until the last few metres, with Speechley looking confident as she crossed over the line ahead of Reddingius, who represented Australia in bobsled at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

In the men’s open 120m sprint final, Adam Kopp started strongly, with Josh Hook running alongside him.

Nathanael Taylor’s pace was matched by Leonora local Brayden Sprigg Dos Santos, but Taylor managed to accelerate in the latter part of the race.

However, Kopp kicked into another gear in the final 20 metres, edging Hook out and winning in 12.93sec.

Hook was only a fraction of a second behind at 13.14sec.

Taylor finished third.
