Narrogin will go close to hitting 40C in the coming days before a cool change to ring in the new year.
Maximum temperatures ranged from the mid-30s to about 40C across the region on Christmas Day, with 39.1C at Wandering among the highest.
That was relatively mild compared to Geraldton, which sweltered through the hottest Christmas Day in Australia.
Geraldton’s 47.3C maximum was a new December record for the city.
Temperatures are set to rise over the next few days in the southern Wheatbelt, with Narrogin a chance of cracking 40C for only the second time this year.
The hottest day of 2021 so far for the town was 40.2C on January 9.
After five consecutive days in the high-30s, the maximum is expected to drop to 27C on New Year’s Day.
