The prestigious HIA WA GreenSmart Awards were announced in July, celebrating the best environmental and sustainable residential buildings in the state. This year saw innovative and resourceful projects entered into a range of categories, including Energy Efficiency, Smart Housing, Sustainable Home and Resource Efficiency, to name a few.
HIA GreenSmart is a way of building which is respectful of the environment and its inhabitants. A registered brand of the Housing Industry Association, GreenSmart was developed in 1999 to provide a means for anyone involved in building or renovating a home to learn about the principles of sustainable design.
HIA recognises excellence in this discipline with the HIA WA GreenSmart Awards. The awards celebrate the diligent efforts of environmentally aware residential builders, designers and manufacturers and recognise those who build or design environmentally friendly homes, provide solutions to make homes more efficient or create new products for the building industry.
Award winners and finalists are making a positive difference to the environment. Leading by example, they are inspiring other HIA members to build sustainable, energy-efficient and comfortable homes for their clients.
HIA Executive Director for Western Australia John Dastlik was impressed with the quality of entries in this year’s GreenSmart Awards.
“It is encouraging to see our members who entered this year’s awards making GreenSmart building practices a priority,” he said. “HIA is proud of our GreenSmart entrants for the exceptional quality and innovation they utilise to create beautiful and efficient homes.
“They demonstrate exactly what our industry is capable of doing to support environmental and sustainable practices.”
Built By S was the winner of the 2018 HIA WA GreenSmart Home of the Year, with its extraordinary project at Quindalup in the South West designed by The Colour Royale Design Group. The judges appreciated the homes’ ability to blend seamlessly with its natural environment and commented, “careful placement of glazed elements allows for the natural bush setting and the treetop vistas to be maximised through various vantage points”.
They also commended the project for a contemporary design “with a commitment to natural organic style products that complement the surrounding landscape”.
The same project by Built by S also won WA GreenSmart Custom Built Home of the Year. The judges were full of praise for this home, adding, “quality construction methodology and a high attention to detail is apparent throughout the project, which is especially difficult to achieve with a minimalist, non-conforming selection of materials and products, as there is nowhere to hide”.
SIPs Industries Australia and Chalk Build were also big winners, taking out the WA GreenSmart Project Home of the Year, WA GreenSmart Renovation/Addition Project of the Year and WA GreenSmart Spec Home of the Year for separate projects at Darlington, South Perth and South Perth respectively. Nulook Homes, Solar Dwellings and StepBeyond won the WA GreenSmart Energy Efficiency Award and WA GreenSmart Smart Home of the Year for their joint entry at West Leederville.
