South Aussie renovators’ perfect score for mega-kitchen

It is widely believed that kitchens sell houses.

Kerrie Charter and Spence Thomson are positively beaming after receiving a perfect score for their latest room reveal on The Block.

Their mammoth kitchen, unveiled in Sunday night’s episode, is the largest ever seen before on the show and cost a pretty penny, with a huge stone bench the centrepiece of the space.

It is the first room at the old Gatwick building in St Kilda to receive a score of 30 from the judges, which Charter said had taken the couple aback.

“It was a complete shock, but a pleasant one,” she said.

“We completely loved our kitchen, but we loved all our rooms and the judges haven’t necessarily agreed, so it was a surprise to get that perfect score.”

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and I really believe that.

Thomson added: “It’s always a nice feeling to win — but to get the first 10 was great, to get the second 10 was brilliant and to get the third, we just weren’t expecting that at all.”

Charter and Thomson are well-versed in renovating, with the latter a professional builder, and believe their kitchen will hold them in good stead come auction day.

“They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and I really believe that,” Charter said.

“Everyone congregates around the island bench and it’s a nice place to be. I think it will help our apartment sell well.”

Thomson agreed: “The number one thing buyers look at is the kitchen, followed by the bathrooms. If buyers aren’t happy with them, they are what cost the most to change, whereas other rooms are more cosmetic.”

Now more than halfway through, the South Australians are thrilled with how their apartment is shaping up overall.

“If I had the money I would buy this apartment,” Thomson said. “That’s how much I love it.”
