Smoky Hill announced Tom Thenell as its new head football coach on Wednesday afternoon.
Thenell, who resigned from Mullen in early January following six seasons and a 34-31 record, takes over a Buffaloes program that’s endured ten straight losing seasons and won three games over the last three years combined.
But if the athletic base demonstrated in the school’s other boys sports — i.e. basketball, track and soccer — is any indication, the former Bear Creek head honcho from 1992-2011 might have something to work with in Aurora.
Projected 2018 starters from last season’s 1-9 team include running back Obasanjo Sanni and David Hoage, the team’s leading returning tackler.
It was the second Class 5A hire in as many days, as Chaparral announced Jeff Ketron as its new head coach on Tuesday. Ketron previously coached at Douglas County from 1999-2013, and takes over for Rod Dobbs.
