Sizzler to close doors in Morley, Innaloo and Kelmscott as restaurant ends 35 years in Australia

As many as 600 jobs are expected to go and the iconic cheesy bread will be no more after US restaurant chain Sizzler confirmed it will officially close its doors after 35 years in Australia.

Following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic the owner of the brand in Australia has decided not to renew the leases on any of its remaining nine restaurants across the country.

That includes the three stores in Perth — in Morley, Innaloo and Kelmscott.

In a statement today Collins Food Limited said it would be offering redundancies and alternative placements at sister companies for its employees after making the difficult decision.

“After more than 35 years in Australia, Sizzler will permanently close the doors of its nine remaining restaurants in Australia by 15 November 2020,” the statement read.

“Collins Foods Limited, the owner of the Sizzler brand in Australia, made the difficult decision to not renew the leases of its remaining Australian restaurants … after sales have been slow to recover from peak COVID-19 impacts.

“Of the three restaurant brands which Collins Foods operates, Sizzler has been hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic as it is based around a casual dining concept, unlike Collins Foods’ KFC and Taco Bell brands.

“Sizzler’s dedicated staff have been informed of this decision and offered appropriate redundancy packages and access to outplacement support, though Collins Foods is looking to redeploy as many affected Sizzler employees as possible to its KFC and Taco Bell network which continue to grow.”
