Sister of Greenough killer victim welcomes Bedford murder sentence

The sister of a WA mass murder victim has welcomed the decision to lock up the Bedford killer for life and throw away the key.

Evalyn Clough says she’s traumatised every time the Greenough murderer comes up for parole and thinks that grieving families should be spared that constant agony.

Yesterday, Anthony Robert Harvey became the first person in WA ordered by a judge never to be released from prison.

But it was not the first time a court had tried to cage a monster for good.

But the last time they tried, the attempt failed.

William Patrick Mitchell murdered Karen Mackenzie and her three children in Greenough 26 years ago.

Karen’s sister Evalyn has been forced to fight to keep her sister’s killer in prison every time he’s come up for parole.

The judge tried to lock him up for life without parole, but the decision was overturned on appeal.

“It’s a massive strain mentally, emotionally — it’s just not something you want anyone to have to go through,” she said.

Harvey has 21 days to appeal the decision that will see him die behind bars.

If he does appeal and is successful, parole would technically become a possibility. But it’s unlikely to be granted by anyone, ever.

“I’ve been told many times that Mitchell will never get out of jail — but that doesn’t stop you from having to deal with the pain of it. It’s possible,” Evalyn said.

Evalyn visted her sister’s killed in prison and told him she would never stop fighting to keep him there.

She wants those grieving the murders in Bedford to know that if they need her she’ll fight for them too.

“If I can do anything I can to help keep him in jail — I certainly will,” she said.
