Salah and teammates targeted with lasers

Egypt players including Mohamed Salah were targeted with lasers during their penalty shootout defeat by Senegal in Tuesday’s World Cup play-off.

Footage showed green lights visible on players’ faces as they stepped up to take their penalties in the crunch game in Dakar.

Salah missed the first spot-kick, while Mostafa Mohamed and Ahmed Sayed were also unsuccessful before Salah’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane scored the decisive penalty to book Senegal’s place in Qatar.

The Egypt Football Association posted pictures of the affected players on their Instagram page accompanied by the caption: “It happens to the best.”

In a separate post, the Egypt FA (EFA) put up pictures apparently showing damage to the team’s bus.

Egypt went into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage, but Hamdi Fathi’s early own goal sent the tie to extra-time, and Senegal secured a repeat of their African Cup of Nations triumph earlier this year.

Salah had also faced racist abuse in a challenging day for their team even before the game began, with pictures posted by the EFA indicating the team bus had been struck by missiles on its way to the stadium.

One window was shattered, while evidence posted on social media by Egyptian authorities showed an apparently cracked windscreen and a rock that had been thrown into the vehicle.

The EFA also posted a picture from inside the stadium of a banner reading “F*** YOU SALAH”.

The EFA said in a statement: “Egypt files an official complaint against Senegal due to the attack and the racist banners.

“The Egyptian team was subjected to racism after offensive banners appeared in the stadium stands for the players, specifically Mohamed Salah, the team leader. This was documented with pictures and videos that were attached to the complaint.”

Egyptian media said the complaint had been filed to CAF – the African confederation – and world governing body FIFA.
