Ryan McMahon tested in a highlight at first base; David Dahl finds hard contact for Rockies vs. Cleveland

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Ryan McMahon’s audition for the major leagues, as the Rockies test him at first base, got a yellow light when news broke of the pending return of Carlos Gonzalez. The dominos might push Ian Desmond back to first base and McMahon back to the minors.

But on Friday, McMahon made his best case yet to stick in the majors. In the second inning of Cleveland’s 8-5 Cactus League victory over the Rockies, McMahon fielded a sharp one-hop line drive, spun toward the outfield and whipped a throw to Trevor Story at second base. They did not complete a double play, but McMahon’s athleticism at first base, a position he only began playing two seasons ago, was evident.

“He looks comfortable, even some of the feeds he’s making, the dishes to the pitcher covering, are relatively smooth,” Colorado manager Bud Black said. “It looks natural for him.”

At the plate, McMahon drove a hot shot up the middle for a single in the second inning off Cleveland ace Corey Kluber. And he smoked a double to right field in the eighth.
