Room for eight in new Vic cop vehicles

With room for eight officers and a heap of specialist equipment, Victoria Police have welcomed a fleet of new riot vans to their armoury.

The four vehicles are part of a swathe of extra resources – 40 new staff, non-lethal equipment, a new mobile command unit and nine SUVs – to help officers respond to major unfolding incidents across the state.

Each transporter can carry up to eight officers and equipment and will be used for out-of-control parties, protests, large public events, natural disaster relief and VIP visits.

“The safety of the Victorian community is the highest priority for Victoria Police and these new transporters will equip us with a better capability to respond,” Acting Superintendent Greg Barras said on Thursday.

The rear sections of the vehicles were imported from the UK and fitted out locally.

The vehicles have been funded by a state government package announced in 2016 which included $35 million over five years to boost the police response to public order incidents.

Victorian Police Minister Lisa Neville said the government had delivered on its promise to boost the police force’s ability to ensure public safety.

“It will provide Victoria Police with the ability to be flexible, to get to events fast and get public order members there quickly to dispel and to break up any public disorder events in Victoria,” she said.
