Rod Marsh memorial: Cricket great’s family offered State Memorial Service, likely to be held at WACA

The family of Rod Marsh has been offered a State Memorial Service – possibly at the WACA Ground which became his sporting home – to honour the late WA cricket legend who died from a heart attack aged 74 last Friday.

While the honour is yet to be accepted by the Marsh family, it was formally offered to them on Tuesday by Premier Mark McGowan with the service likely be held next month to allow for increased crowd capacity, following the expected easing of COVID-related restrictions.

The wicketkeeping great, who formed a formidable on-field partnership and long-time off-field friendship with champion fast bowler Dennis Lillee, never recovered from the heart attack he suffered in Bundaberg on February 24.

His body was later transferred to his family’s current home State of South Australia. His death came just hours before another Australian cricket legend Shane Warne, who also died from a heart attack, in Thailand.
