A stalwart of WA basketball has died after a freak accident in the South West last week.

Anthony Exeter was driving near Ludlow with his wife and two children at 1.15pm on Friday when a canopy detached from a boat being towed in front of him and slammed into the windscreen of his car.

The 41-year-old received serious injuries and was in Royal Perth Hospital during the weekend.

His family prayed for a recovery but on Sunday night doctors turned off Mr Exeter’s life support.

Mr Exeter played more than 300 games for the Rockingham Flames and Perth Redbacks in the State Basketball League.

He was crowned SBL rookie of the year in his debut season for the Flames in 1995 and is among few Australians ever to earn the league’s highest honour, named most valuable player in 2000. He was also selected for the SBL All-Star team from 1999 to 2001.

He turned down advances from multiple National Basketball League clubs.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing and police want anyone with dash cam vision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
