Racing to beat breast cancer

There aren’t many Derby Day tips that will see you back a winner.

But there is one event that will see you not only have a good time but pay dividends back into the community.

Breast Cancer Care WA celebrates its fourth annual Spring Day at the Races at Ascot Racecourse tomorrow.

More than 300 supporters, victims and survivors of breast cancer will come together for a day filled with punting, pampering and a few laughs.

Every dollar raised on the day helps the charity support those in need of nursing, counselling and financial support.

“The one thing our breast cancer clients don’t often get to do is throw back their heads and have a laugh,” chief executive of BCCWA Zoe McAlpine told AAA.

“There are so many wonderful events on during the racing season, we wanted to make this an affordable one, people can dress up, come along and support us.”

Sophie Kerrigan — ambassador, make-up artist and partner of BCCWA chairman of the board Malcom Day — is supporting the event by pampering guests with Arbonne products.

“This is the first one for me — very excited — I love going to the races and this fundraiser will be amazing,” Kerrigan said. “I’ll be there pampering ladies, we’ll have raffle prizes and anything that’s purchased on the day goes straight to the charity.”

Halo the Label milliner Debbie Cooray has donated one of her stunning handmade creations for the silent auction.

“I love to support the amazing charity that it is,” she said. “It’s good to remind people of a very serious thing that touches a lot of people’s lives. They are amazing in what they do and it’s been a delight to be involved.”
