Qualifier Tiafoe into final with Zverev

Germany’s Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will face American Frances Tiafoe for a fifth title of the season on Sunday in the final of the ATP indoor tournament in Vienna.

Zverev needed only 69 minutes to dispose of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 6-3 in Saturday’s semi-final while Tiafoe came from behind to shock Italian seventh seed Jannick Sinner 3-6 7-5 6-2.

After victories in Acapulco, Madrid, the Tokyo Games and Cincinnati, Zverev is continuing his excellent form for the season and said his clinical display in the last four was, “the best match I have played this week.

“I haven’t played so well this week,” he told ServusTV. “I have had extreme problems from the baseline, I warmed up for an hour and a half today and finally found my rhythm.

“I hope that also stays the same for tomorrow.”

Tiafoe came through two qualifiers to make the 32-man main draw, then defeated three top-20 players including world No.3 Stefanos Tistsipas en route to the final.

The world No.49 came back from 0-3 in the final set against Tsitsipas and was a set and 2-5 down before overcoming Sinner.

“It has been a long week for me,” Tiafoe said. “I tried to have fun with it and get the crowd involved and could see if he would get a little nervous. I know how to get the crowd behind me, few jokes and that and then I started to play unbelievably. The crowd made the difference. I felt because of them I started to lock in harder.”

The 23-year-old is bidding to win his first tour-level title since he triumphed in Delray Beach in 2018.

“It is huge [to be in the final]. I have played some great tennis all week and now I want to win the tournament,” Tiafoe added.
