Qld hospital virus breach report delayed

A report investigating how a nurse at Brisbane’s Prince Charles Hospital got COVID-19 and sparked a statewide lockdown has been delayed by two weeks, the health minister says.

The Griffin report was due to be released on Friday but will not be handed down until August 20.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says the delay in the report was requested by investigator Professor Paul Griffin.

“Of course, we are very eager to see that report and what learnings can be gained from that. But the director-general has advised that that extension has been granted so we expect the report to be provided to the department on the 20th of August now,” she told reporters on Friday.

The government will also get the first look at the report before information is made public to protect the anonymity of healthcare workers who were interviewed.

Ms D’Ath added that the extension was granted on the basis the report will be handed down on August 20, with no further extensions following.

“This review is going on independent, and I simply became aware this morning that there was an extension being sought,” she said.

“I’m not surprised, you think of the disruption that’s happening across our hospitals right now and any sort of work that’s being done with interviewing health workers and so forth, those health workers are also busy doing a whole lot of other things.”

Opposition health spokeswoman Ros Bates said it was fine if Prof Griffin needs more time, but wants complete transparency from the government.

“I heard the health minister say that the Grand Chancellor report (into a hotel quarantine breach) was released in full, well that is absolutely laughable,” she said on Friday.

“There was a police report, there was a health report. And what we got was a 20 page summary, watered down spin-cycle version from the Labor government.

“We didn’t get the police report, and we didn’t get the full health report. So the only reason that it won’t be reported in full is so they can put it through the spin cycle, and so they can wash their hands of any responsibility for this latest outbreak that put us in another lockdown.”
